Doina Petrescu was born and trained as an architect in Romania. She considers herself a `nomadic subject´ operating between different fields of research and practice, places and cultures. She has studied philosophy at the School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences in Paris with Jacques Derrida and completed a PhD in Women´s Studies at the University of Paris VIII. She is a passionate educator. Having previously taught at the UAUIM Bucharest, Iowa State University, EA Paris-Malaquais, Architectural Association London.
Petrescu has started working at the School of Architecture of The University of Sheffield in 2001 and has been teaching there since. In 2001 she co-founded atelier d’architecture autogérée (aaa – Studio for Self-managed Architecture) together with Constantin Petcou. One of the projects by aaa collective is R-URBAN, an internationally acclaimed professional and citizen initiative of resilient regeneration started in 2008. Since March 2014 Doina is involved in a campaign against the destruction of R-URBAN project in Colombes, France, where municipality threatens to replace the project area with a temporary car park.
