Tomas S. Butkus is an independent publisher, designer, poet, and author.
In 1992 he founded a creative studio “Vario burnos” where he is editor-in-chief. Butkus graduated from Vilnius Gediminas Technical University with MA in architecture, and in 2009 he was awarded a PhD with the thesis “The Representation of Cultural Functions within the Urban Structure.” He authored two monographs: City as an Event: Urban Study of Cultural Functions (2011), and Urban Development of Klaipėda in 1945–1990 (2016, co-authored with V. Safronovas and V. Petrulis). In the International Publishers Competition (London, 2004), Butkus was nominated as one of the world’s eight most creative young publishers. Butkus is a researcher at the Institute of Urban Design, Architecture and Design of Vilnius Academy of Arts, Lithuania.
